🔹Hong Kong airport named best aviation cargo hub in Asia-Pacific for third year running

Hong Kong International Airport has been named the best cargo airport in the Asia-Pacific for the third consecutive year at the Payload Asia Awards, also earning accolades as the "air cargo technology provider of the year." Recently, it was recognized at the Air Cargo News Awards and the Super Terminal Expo for its advancements in technology and sustainable initiatives. The Airport Authority aims to strengthen the airport's position as a leading international hub and plans to increase its annual cargo capacity to 10 million tonnes.

🔹Shenzhen's Yantian Port expands global reach with increased throughput in 2024

Yantian Port in Shenzhen is vital to the global supply chain, handling over a third of Guangdong Province's foreign trade. With nearly 100 shipping routes connecting to various destinations worldwide, the port has introduced 18 new routes in 2024, enhancing options for Chinese businesses. In the first eight months of the year, container throughput rose by 12% to 9.66 million TEUs, with a 14.9% increase in vessel movements and a 13.7% rise in cargo throughput to 37.94 million tonnes.

🔹China Southern General Aviation will provide helicopter charter services between Guangzhou and Hong Kong

The Deputy Secretary for Financial Services, Paul Chan, announced that he and the Secretary for Transport and Logistics, Lam Sai-hung, held an online meeting with the Chairman of China Southern General Aviation, Li Erbao, to discuss the development of cross-border helicopter services. They welcomed the upcoming helicopter charter service between Guangzhou Baiyun Airport and Hong Kong International Airport, marking the first commercial service of its kind, which will significantly enhance connectivity between Hong Kong and Guangdong. The service, which will take just 45 minutes, follows successful test flights conducted in September, and the government plans to support further expansion of cross-border helicopter services to strengthen air traffic links in the Greater Bay Area.

The plan includes 12 measures to support mergers and acquisitions (M&As) in key sectors such as integrated circuits, biomedicine, and new materials, targeting around 300 billion yuan in M&A deals to create competitive industry leaders. 🔹Tianjin Port Acquires Advanced Transport Trucks for Efficiency

Tianjin Port Development Holdings is enhancing its logistics capabilities with the acquisition of 42 ART intelligent transport flatbed trucks from Jinan Heavy Equipment Co, amounting to RMB106,260,000. These transactions, categorised as connected under Hong Kong’s Listing Rules, aim to boost efficiency at the terminal through advanced autonomous driving and monitoring technologies. The purchase highlights the company’s strategic focus on leveraging innovative transport solutions in its operations.

🔹Qingdao Port sets new automated terminal record

The automated container terminal at Qingdao Port achieved a productivity record of 60.6 TEUs per hour during an unloading task, marking the 11th world record for automated terminal efficiency. Since its opening in May 2017, the terminal has consistently improved, with a 6% year-on-year increase in efficiency and a 15% rise in cargo throughput compared to 2023, allowing it to exceed last year's total throughput 43 days early. Following recent upgrades to its intelligent control system, the terminal is poised to enhance operational efficiency by an additional 6.3%. Qingdao Port is now the fourth-largest port globally by cargo throughput and the second-largest in China for foreign trade, handling over 23.16 million TEUs in the first three quarters of 2024.

The plan includes constructing a new port in Changwon, which will integrate with the existing Busan Port to create a "mega port" with double the current cargo capacity, accommodating 66 vessels and extending the total berth length. Additionally, the initiative will incorporate carbon-free renewable energy facilities to support sustainable maritime logistics amidst geopolitical uncertainties.

 

🔹South Korea to safeguard competition after Korean Air, Asiana merger

South Korea will support smaller airlines and monitor market competitiveness following Korean Air's acquisition of a 1.8 trillion won (S$1.7 billion) stake in Asiana Airlines, making it a subsidiary. This acquisition creates one of Asia's largest carriers, with the expanded Korean Air group expected to account for over half of South Korea's passenger capacity and rank as the world's 12th-largest airline by international capacity, alongside China's top state-owned carriers.

Myanmar’s economy is projected to contract by 1% in the fiscal year ending March 2025, reflecting ongoing conflict and significant challenges such as natural disasters, high inflation, and currency depreciation, according to the World Bank's latest outlook. The report highlights the severe impacts of armed conflict, particularly from the Three Brotherhood Alliance's recent offensives, which have led to widespread displacement and disrupted supply chains. With about 14.3 million people facing acute food insecurity and increasing migration as a coping mechanism, the long-term economic outlook remains bleak, with risks of further declines due to potential escalations in conflict or natural disasters.
