China-Europe Railway Express: The Iron Bond Connecting Asia and Europe

Introduction:In today's globalized economic landscape, the importance of international logistics transportation is self-evident. The China-Europe Railway Express, as an emerging and highly influential mode of transportation, is increasingly becoming an important bridge connecting China with Europe and the countries along the Belt and Road.

1. Definition and Development History

The China-Europe Railway Express is a container rail intermodal train organized by China State Railway Group, operating between China, Europe, and countries along the Belt and Road. Since the first "Chongqing-Xinjiang-Europe" (Yu-Xin-Ou) train departed from Chongqing in March 2011, it has witnessed rapid growth. As of June 2025, it has operated over 110,000 trips, with a cargo value exceeding $450 billion, becoming a vital channel for international logistics.

 2. Route Network

The China-Europe Railway Express has established three main channels:

  • Western Channel: Departing from central and western China via Alashankou (Horgos) Port.
  • Central Channel: Departing from northern China via Erenhot Port.
  • Eastern Channel: Departing from northeastern China via Manzhouli (Suifenhe) Port.

Domestically, it connects 128 cities in China; internationally, it reaches 229 cities in 26 European countries and over 100 cities in 11 Asian countries. For example, Xi'an's "Chang'an Hao" has operated 21,193 trips as of December 15, 2023, with an average of one train departing or arriving at Xi'an International Port every 100 minutes. It was the first in China to exceed 5,000 trips annually and 20,000 trips cumulatively, weaving a dense logistics network across Eurasia.

 3.Unique Advantages

  • Significant Time Efficiency: Compared to traditional sea freight (20-30 days), the railway express takes only 10-15 days, appealing to time-sensitive goods like electronics and seasonal products. For instance, new mobile phones and computers can reach European markets faster, enhancing the competitiveness of Chinese electronics.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: Costing less than air freight and more than sea freight, it balances speed and cost, especially for high-value goods. Scale effects continue to drive costs down.
  • Stability & Weather Resistance: Unlike sea freight disrupted by typhoons or tsunamis, the railway operates stably regardless of weather, ensuring on-time delivery and reducing supply chain risks.
  • Diverse Cargo Range: From initial textiles and electronics, it now transports 50,000+ products across 53 categories, including automobiles, food, new energy vehicles, and photovoltaic products. Food cargo value grew by 50% last year, with Chinese tea and European dairy products exemplifying two-way trade.

 4.Future Development Directions

   a) Infrastructure Enhancement:

  • Upgrade domestic railway stations (e.g., Chongqing Tuanjiecun Station reduced loading/unloading time by 20%-30%).
  • Unify railway gauges at border ports and strengthen rail communication cooperation with countries along the route.

   b)Digitalization Improvement:

  • Build a real-time tracking platform and mobile APP for cargo status inquiry.
  • Optimize routes with big data, increasing loading rates by 15%-20%.

   c)Diversified Services Expansion:

  • Launch special transport for cold chain goods (e.g., refrigerated containers for Chinese fresh produce to Europe).
  • Construct logistics parks in European hubs to provide one-stop services like warehousing and processing.

   d)Multimodal Transport Integration:

  • Connect with road and sea freight for door-to-door delivery.
  • Establish intermodal hubs at coastal ports for seamless rail-sea transfer.

   e)Innovative Models Development:

  • Promote "Cultural Express" for art transportation and "Tourist Express" for cross-border travel.
  • Adopt green technologies to reduce carbon emissions, aligning with global sustainability goals.

Conclusion: As a flagship project of the Belt and Road Initiative, the China-Europe Railway Express will continue to empower global trade through innovation, solidifying its role as the core logistics link between Asia and Europe.
