Hong Kong Air Cargo (HKAC) has launched a new weekly all-cargo route connecting Hong Kong International Airport to Birmingham Airport in the UK, using an Airbus A330-200 freighter. This marks the airline's second UK route after launching its London Stansted service in February. The new route aims to enhance cargo logistics and trade between Hong Kong and Birmingham, reflecting HKAC's ongoing network expansion to capitalize on the growing e-commerce market. Recent additions to their network include routes to Budapest, Oslo, and Riyadh, with plans for further expansion in Europe.

🔹Guangzhou Designated as Key National Logistics Hub to Boost Economic Growth

Guangzhou has been selected as one of 26 national logistics hubs in China, following the recent announcement by the National Development and Reform Commission. The designation of Guangzhou as a production service logistics hub enhances its logistics infrastructure and supports the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area. This hub will serve as a key node in the national logistics network, facilitating efficient connections between production and consumption, and promoting the region's economic growth.Guangzhou's logistics hub is strategically located and equipped with world-class transportation infrastructure, including ports and railways. The project covers an area of 6.38 square kilometers and aims to lower logistics costs while improving interconnectivity. A dedicated leadership team has been established to oversee the hub's development, supported by a smart logistics management platform that utilizes big data to streamline operations.

🔹In 75 years, an increase of over 5,000 times: A significant leap in Shanghai's cargo import and export

According to statistics released by Shanghai Customs on September 29, the total value of Shanghai's imports and exports has grown from $119 million in 1950 to $599.03 billion in 2023, marking an increase of over 5,000 times in 75 years. As China's largest international air port, Shanghai handles a quarter of the country's inbound and outbound travelers and half of its international air logistics.In the first eight months of this year, Shanghai's airport reported 336 million cross-border e-commerce export transactions, valued at 52.77 billion yuan. Additionally, the "China-Europe Railway Express - Shanghai" has connected over 80 cities and stations, facilitating significant logistics operations. Shanghai's shipbuilding industry has also thrived, with ship exports valued at 43.86 billion yuan, a 104.8% increase year-on-year. The city is also a major hub for integrated circuits, with imports and exports accounting for about one-third of the national total.

🔹 Opening of the International Logistics Corridor from Guancheng County to Tianjin Port

On September 28, the opening ceremony for the experimental train service from Guancheng County to Tianjin Port was held, attended by local officials including Yan Youliang, the director of the Municipal Transport Bureau, and Zhang Qinghui, the deputy county mayor. The new train service aims to enhance the international logistics corridor to the north, accelerate the development of the Guanzhou International Land Port, and attract cargo from surrounding cities.Officials emphasized the significance of this initiative in improving the railway network and promoting sustainable transport. It is seen as a major step towards establishing a regional transportation logistics center and supporting high-quality development in the Yellow River basin. 🔹Vietnam economy grows 7.4% in third quarter but sees tougher Q4 for the year

Vietnam's economic growth unexpectedly accelerated in the last quarter, with GDP rising 7.4% from the previous year, surpassing estimates and reflecting strong manufacturing and export performance. However, the impact of Super Typhoon Yagi, which caused significant damage and is expected to challenge growth in the coming months, looms over the economy.The government aims to attract foreign investment, particularly in technology, while addressing infrastructure and logistical costs. Despite the storm's aftermath, the International Monetary Fund predicts Vietnam will grow 6.1% this year, supported by robust external demand and foreign direct investment. However, achieving the government's 2024 GDP growth target of 6.8%-7% may prove challenging due to ongoing geopolitical and economic pressures.

🔹Avolon leases five A330neos to T’way Air

Avolon, a leading global aviation finance company, has agreed to lease five Airbus A330neos to South Korean low-cost carrier T’way Air, with deliveries scheduled for 2026. This deal will aid T’way in expanding its international route network, which currently serves 55 destinations. T’way becomes the 12th operator of the A330neo in Avolon's customer base.Avolon’s 2024 Outlook indicates that the market for widebody aircraft is tightening, with manufacturers expected to sell out remaining delivery slots until 2030 by the end of this year. The A330neo offers significant improvements over its predecessor, the A330ceo, including a range of over 13,300 km and a 25% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Avolon’s President, Paul Geaney, expressed enthusiasm about supporting T’way's growth strategy with the A330neo, highlighting Avolon's commitment to meeting global travel demand.

🔹US port strike ends, leaving cargo backlog

U.S. East Coast and Gulf Coast ports reopened on October 4 after dockworkers and port operators reached a wage agreement to end the largest work stoppage in nearly 50 years. The strike concluded sooner than anticipated, reducing concerns about negative economic impacts, but clearing the resulting cargo backlog will take time. At least 54 container ships were waiting to unload, and it may take two to three weeks for normal operations to resume. The wage deal reportedly includes a 62% increase over six years, raising average hourly wages to about $63. The strike, which began with 45,000 workers, affected 36 ports and was estimated to cost the U.S. economy around $5 billion per day.

Monitors have been installed at the cargo export division to display booking and shipment data, while the call center, available daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, allows customers to inquire about shipment details. These initiatives aim to streamline information flow and improve service efficiency for exporters.

 

 Myanmar

🔹Myanmar Junta Receives Six More Chinese Warplanes Amid Deadly Airstrikes on Civilians 

In August, Myanmar's military junta received six FTC-2000G midrange fighter jets from China, which are intended to enhance its aerial bombardment capabilities against ethnic armies amidst ongoing civil conflict. The aircraft, delayed in delivery and pilot training due to the COVID-19 pandemic, are part of a 2020 order and can perform various roles including attack and reconnaissance, with a payload capacity of up to 3 tonnes. Their arrival coincides with increased military cooperation between China and Myanmar, following a meeting between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and junta leader Min Aung Hlaing. This military support has been linked to a spike in airstrikes on civilian targets, resulting in significant casualties, including many children.
