🔹Ningbo Port Container Explosion - Hazardous Goods Container Ignites

A container explosion and fire incident occurred at Ningbo Zhoushan Port in China on August 9th. The container ship involved was the Liberian-flagged "Dynamic" vessel, transiting from Shanghai to Jakarta with 20 crew who safely disembarked. Preliminary investigations indicate the container held tert-butyl peroxybenzoate and lithium batteries, a highly flammable and explosive liquid. Yangming Marine Transport reported the fire broke out while the "YM Mobility" vessel was at Ningbo Port, likely caused by an explosion in a dangerous goods container used improperly as a refrigerated unit. The exact cause is still under investigation, but the use of an improper container highlights the need for strict safety protocols when transporting hazardous materials by sea.

However, the air cargo industry is still facing a difficult situation.Cargo movement was stopped for several days as the government shut down the internet and installed road blockades. Cargo operations have since resumed, but exporters now face backlogs and higher rates.Rates to Europe and the US are around 3 times higher than usual, reaching $6/kg to Europe and $8.50/kg to the US. Forwarders are using alternative routings via Colombo, Singapore, Male, and Dubai to bypass the issues. The extended transit times and limited flight options are exacerbating the situation, leading to increased rates and delays.
