Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), recognized as the world's busiest cargo airport since 2010, connects to approximately 200 global destinations. With the commissioning of the Three-runway System (3RS) on November 28, 2024, HKIA aims to serve 120 million passengers and handle 10 million tonnes of cargo, while developing the Airport City to enhance connectivity with the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and solidify its status as a key international hub.

🔹JD Logistics Launches Shenzhen-Bangkok Flight Through JD Airlines

JD Logistics has launched a new international air cargo route connecting Shenzhen, China, with Bangkok, Thailand, operated by JD Airlines, with flights departing three times a week. This route facilitates the shipment of Chinese products to Thailand and exports of Thai seafood and fruits to China. Additionally, JD Logistics aims to enhance its distribution efficiency in Thailand and position the route as a key transit hub for shipments to Europe and North America. The company also operates other routes, including one to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, using cold chain solutions for fresh produce. Overall, JD Logistics is accelerating its international expansion by developing a global warehouse, express delivery, and air freight network to achieve a "2-3 Day Delivery Circle" in various overseas markets.

🔹Guangdong's New International Airport Approved to Enhance Cargo Capacity and Alleviate Congestion

China's State Council has approved the construction of a new international airport in Guangdong province to alleviate congestion and establish the region as an international cargo hub. The Pearl River Delta Hub (Guangzhou New) Airport, set to begin operations in 2028, aims for a capacity of 30 million annual trips by 2035 and 500,000 tonnes of cargo by 2030, eventually reaching 2.2 million tonnes by 2050. This initiative is part of a broader five-year plan for civil aviation development and follows the busy operations of existing airports in the region, including Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport and Hong Kong International Airport.

🔹Shanghai's Hai Gang Zhi Yuan Supplies Green Methanol to Maersk in Historic Bunkering Operation

The Shanghai International Port Group's bunkering ship, Hai Gang Zhi Yuan, has supplied 3,000 tons of green methanol to Ane Maersk, marking one of the world's first boxships powered by this alternative fuel, at Yangshan Port on January 1, 2025. This operation, which took place alongside container loading and unloading, is noted as the first synchronized ship-to-ship bunkering for a large methanol-powered container vessel at the port. The Hai Gang Zhi Yuan is also recognized as Shanghai's first methanol bunkering ship, having begun its maiden voyage in January 2024 after a conversion process.

🔹Tianjin Customs Launches First Central Asia Train in 2025, Enhancing International Logistics

A train loaded with computer parts, daily necessities, and machinery recently departed from the Tianjin New Port North Railway Container Center, marking the first Central Asia train supervised by Tianjin Customs in 2025. This journey will take approximately seven days to exit through the Erenhot port and arrive in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.Tianjin Customs has implemented various facilitation services over the past two years, streamlining processes and significantly increasing business volume, including monitoring and coordinating logistics to enhance efficiency. In 2024, they managed over 600 Central Asia and China-Europe trains, facilitating a total of 60,000 standard containers and promoting smoother international logistics.

🔹Qingdao Launches First High-Speed Rail Freight Service, Enhancing Logistics and Economic Development

On January 5, the first express train on Shandong Province's high-speed rail freight line departed from Qingdao North Station, marking a significant milestone in the development of high-speed rail logistics in the region. The train, carrying six tons of cargo, traveled 769 kilometers to Zhengzhou Airport Station in just 3 hours and 37 minutes.This new service, which will operate daily, aims to enhance logistics efficiency and promote local industries, including e-commerce and fresh food. Qingdao's transportation authorities highlight the advantages of high-speed rail freight over road and air transport, emphasizing its potential to lower logistics costs and boost economic development in the region.

Flexport has opened a new warehouse in Thu Dau Mot City, Vietnam, to support the growing demand for manufacturing in Southeast Asia amid the China-US trade war. This facility will serve as a crucial hub for operations in the region, with freight volumes from Vietnam increasing by 32% this year. Partnering with ITL Corporation, Flexport aims to enhance cargo visibility for clients, offering real-time updates on cargo status through its app.

 

 

 South Korea

🔹Korean Airlines Launch Eco-Friendly Flights with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)

Korean Air and six other airlines in South Korea have begun operating commercial flights using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), a move aimed at promoting eco-friendly aviation and aligning with the government's SAF expansion strategy. This eco-friendly fuel, derived from biomass and carbon capture, can reduce carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional jet fuel. Starting in 2027, a mandate for 1% SAF blending on international flights will be implemented, with the potential to reduce annual emissions by approximately 160,000 tons.

🔹Bangladesh Water Transport Workers Strike in Response to MV Al Bakhera Killings

Water transport workers in Bangladesh have initiated an indefinite strike, halting cargo transport from Chattogram following the brutal killing of seven crew members from the lighter vessel MV Al Bakhera on December 23. The Bangladesh Water Transport Workers Federation is demanding the arrest of the culprits, compensation for the victims, and improved security for water transport workers, while operations of lighter vessels carrying imported cargo have been suspended.

🔹Rising Demand for Cold-Rolled Steel in Myanmar's Growing Automotive Industry

In recent years, Myanmar's imports of cold-rolled steel for automobiles have significantly increased, closely related to the rapid development of the country's automotive industry and infrastructure construction. With the influx of foreign investment, the demand for cold-rolled steel from Myanmar's automobile manufacturing companies has been continuously rising, primarily imported from China, Japan, South Korea, and Southeast Asian countries. Despite challenges such as insufficient domestic production capacity and high reliance on imports, it is expected that the import volume will continue to grow in the coming years, with a promising market outlook.
