🔹Hong Kong International cargo volumes continue to soar

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has experienced robust cargo growth, with a 17.6% year-on-year increase in June 2023 to 417,000 tonnes and a 14.8% increase in 12-month cargo throughput to 4.7 million tonnes, retaining its position as the world's busiest cargo airport. This growth has been driven by rising export volumes, e-commerce, and strategic investments by stakeholders, including expanded intermodal operations and new facility developments.

 

 Shenzhen, China

🔹China’s Shenzhen city has 1.08 million new energy vehicles running on roads by June 2024

As of June 2024, Shenzhen has around 4.263 million motor vehicles, of which over 1.08 million (over 25%) are new energy vehicles (NEVs).In the first half of 2024, Shenzhen deployed 109,000 new NEVs, bringing the NEV penetration rate to 72.6%. In June 2024 alone, the NEV penetration rate reached a record high of 77.4%.Shenzhen has been prioritizing the development of the NEV industry. In 2023, the city's NEV production reached 1.73 million units. Shenzhen is now home to over 24,000 new energy and digital power enterprises.Key developments include the second phase of the BYD Auto Industrial Park reaching full production capacity, the launch and large-scale delivery of the new AITO M7 Ultra model, and CATL establishing new subsidiaries and a new energy supply chain company in the city.Shenzhen is making rapid progress in the electrification of its vehicle fleet, with NEVs now accounting for over 77% of new vehicle registrations in the city.

🔹Guangzhou Zengcheng West Station has successfully operated over 1,000 China-Europe Railway Express

On July 19th, a China-Europe freight train carrying daily goods departed from the Guangzhou Eastern Road-rail Intermodal Transport Hub in Zengcheng, bound for Western European countries via the Horgos Port. This marks the 1000th such freight train launched from the Zengcheng West Station, which has become a crucial international logistics hub in Guangzhou and southern China, with rapidly growing operational volume, expanded route coverage, and diversified freight train services catering to various customer needs.

 

 Shanghai, China

🔹Virgin Atlantic will stop its service to Shanghai later this year

Virgin Atlantic will be terminating its daily service between London Heathrow and Shanghai, China later this year. The final flights will operate on October 25 (Heathrow to Shanghai) and October 26 (Shanghai to Heathrow).This decision comes after 25 years of operating the route, due to increased operational costs. The inability to fly over Russian airspace has led to significantly longer flight times, requiring more aircraft and crew time.Flight times from Heathrow to Shanghai are around 1 hour longer, while Shanghai to Heathrow flights are 2 hours longer.Virgin Atlantic had already decided not to restore its Hong Kong route after the pandemic, citing operational complexities from the closure of Russian airspace.The airline said this was a "difficult decision" but the challenges and complexities of the route made it commercially unviable to continue the service.Virgin Atlantic's Asia Pacific network will now focus on India (Delhi and Mumbai) and the Maldives, after suspending both its China routes.

🔹The first Baoding-Tianjin Port "Port City Train" departs successfully

The China Railway Beijing Group has launched the inaugural "Port City Train" freight service from Baoding to Tianjin Port, achieving seamless integration between maritime and inland rail transport. From late January to June 30th this year, the China Railway Beijing Group has cumulatively operated 426 "Port City Trains" and transported 634,000 tons of various goods, forming multiple stable and efficient transportation routes.To ensure the smooth opening of this new Baoding-Tianjin Port line, the railway logistics center has set up a dedicated service team. They conducted in-depth research into enterprises, tailor-made transportation plans, and provided one-stop services to help companies smoothly transition to rail transportation. The logistics center has also made advanced preparations, such as securing enough containers, opening fast tracks, and closely monitoring train operations, to ensure cargo can reach Tianjin Port safely and efficiently in the shortest time possible.Overall, the opening of this new line has played a positive role in accelerating the integrated "rail-based" development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.

🔹Vietnamese seaports to handle 1.2-1.4 billion tonnes of cargo by 2030

Vietnam's seaport cargo throughput is projected to reach 1.2-1.4 billion tonnes by 2030, with container cargo expected to range from 46.3 to 54.34 million TEUs. Seaport groups 1 and 4 are forecast to handle the highest cargo volumes during this period. Passenger traffic through seaports is anticipated to reach 17-19 million by 2030. The plan calls for 33,800 hectares of total land, with 17,300 hectares dedicated to seaports, and 606,000 hectares of total water surface. The investment required for the seaport system by 2030 is estimated at nearly 352 trillion VND (13.9 billion USD).

🔹Korean Air,Japan Airlines buy wide-body jets from Boeing

Korean Air and Japan Airlines on Monday announced they have placed orders for long-distance jets from Boeing in a vote of confidence for the beleaguered plane manufacturer.Korean Air announced plans to order up to 50 wide-body jetliners from Boeing: 20 777X jets that still need to be certified, 20 787-10 Dreamliner planes and an option for 10 more of the largest 787 Dreamliner variant.Separately, Japan announced an agreement of 10 more Boeing 787 Dreamliners with an option for 10 additional planes.

🔹Air freight rates on Asia-US routes continue to rise, driven by e-commerce and AI

Air freight rates on Asia-US routes have risen again this week. Rates for direct flights to the US West Coast have increased by 15 RMB per kilogram (a 5% increase), while rates for direct flights to the US East Coast have increased by 10 RMB per kilogram (a 3% increase). Rates for Asia to US West Coast are now around 290-300 RMB per kilogram, and rates for Asia to US East Coast are around 310-315 RMB per kilogram, both reaching relatively high levels. Rates for transit shipments are relatively lower, at around 185-190 RMB per kilogram for both the US West and East Coasts. Rates on the Asia-Europe route have remained relatively flat, at around 145 RMB per kilogram.The impact of Typhoon Cami may affect some flights, leading shippers to ship earlier or delay shipments to avoid impact. The Hanshin military exercises may also lead to the cancellation of some cargo flights. Overall, there is strong outbound demand from the US West Coast this week, with e-commerce and AI server shipments helping drive air cargo market demand. China Airlines and EVA Air have added new freighter aircraft, which will help them capture market opportunities.

🔹Evacuation flight for Malaysians in Bangladesh safely lands in Dhaka

The AirAsia flight AK77 has safely landed in Dhaka, Bangladesh to evacuate Malaysians. All the evacuees were waiting at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to board the specially chartered Airbus A320 flight. The flight is scheduled to depart for Kuala Lumpur at 10am local time. Malaysia's High Commissioner to Bangladesh was present to see the evacuees off. Most of the evacuees stayed overnight at the Malaysian High Commission. The flight to Kuala Lumpur International Airport is expected to take around 4 hours and the evacuees are expected to be greeted by the Home Minister upon arrival.

🔹 In the 2024-25 fiscal year, Myanmar's honey exports reached 335.31 tons

During the first 3 months of the 2024-25 fiscal year, Myanmar's honey exports recorded 335.31 tons, achieving $8.16 million. The key export destinations are Japan, South Korea, the US, Thailand, and Singapore. The main production regions are Sagaing, Mandalay, Magway, and Shan State, producing date honey, Niger honey, sunflower honey, and litchi honey.

🔹 Myanmar-India discuss energy sector cooperation

On July 24, 2024, at 11 AM in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar's Deputy Foreign Minister Mr. Lwin Oo met with Ms. Elena Ajmone Sessera, the ICRC Representative in Myanmar. The meeting was attended by the Deputy Foreign Minister, relevant officials, the ICRC Representative, and Deputy Representative Mr. Jan Miskkoc.

The discussions covered topics such as provision of medical services in Myanmar's conflict areas, humanitarian assistance, and compliance with international humanitarian law.

🔹 Korean and Chinese electric vehicles arrive at Yangon port

On July 24, 2024, in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar's Minister of Energy Mr. Ko Ko Lwin met with the Indian Ambassador to Myanmar, Mr. Abhay Thakur.

The meeting was attended by the Energy Minister, managing directors, and officials from the Myanmar embassy. They discussed Myanmar-India energy sector cooperation, oil exploration plans, and refining technologies.
